Last Thursday, I had the privilege of attending the first-ever CAVA Gala at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto. As a voice actor, it was inspiring to be part of an event dedicated to celebrating and supporting the Canadian voiceover industry.

For those unfamiliar with CAVA, the Canadian Association of Voice Actors is a national non-profit organization created by industry professionals to advocate for Canadian voice actors and voiceover artists. Inspired by the U.S.-based National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA), CAVA was established to address the unique legal, business, and industry challenges facing voice talent in Canada.

One of CAVA’s primary missions is advocating for ethical and fair policies surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), particularly regarding the use of performers’ voices and likenesses. The organization also provides education and resources on topics that directly impact voiceover professionals, including AI, voiceover scams, live-directed recording sessions, contract literacy, and business development. Most importantly, CAVA exists to help Canada’s voiceover community grow, connect and thrive.

The inaugural gala was a spectacular success from beginning to end. More than 200 guests attended the event, which featured live and silent auctions, dancing, reconnecting and a celebration of excellence within the voice acting industry. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the “I Am Canadian” Award to acclaimed Canadian actor Colm Feore.

Over the past year, CAVA has done remarkable work advocating for voice actors across Canada while collaborating closely with NAVA on industry initiatives. Beyond the awards and festivities, what made the evening truly special was the opportunity to reconnect with friends, colleagues, and fellow voice artists in person (sometimes after years of working together remotely).

Voiceover can often be a solitary profession, which is why events like the CAVA Gala are so important. They strengthen the Canadian voice acting community, foster meaningful professional relationships, and create opportunities for new collaborations. The inaugural CAVA Gala demonstrated the power of connection within the voiceover industry and I’m already looking forward to attending again next year!
